Tiramisu with Tea instead of coffee Recipe

My take on the classic Italian dessert is a Tiramisu with Tea. It sounds odd but believe me it tastes really good. Great if you don’t like coffee.

I do love a cup of tea and I wanted to see how it would work in a traditionally coffee based pudding – the tiramisu. It turns out that it works very well indeed. What is more interesting is how the tea and chocolate flavours work together. I am going to have experiment further with those later but for now here is my Tea-amisu! I do like a good food based pun.

Desserts using tea

There are a good ways to use tea in desserts and in a tiramisu is one of my favourites. The flavour of the tea and the cream work so well together. Plus the chocolate on top is a trio of delicious flavours.

Tiramisu with Tea in cups and saucers decorated with chocolate shavings

I loved serving it in cups with saucers. It made it more special and it was so cute on the table in the sunshine. The glass cups worked well so you could see the delicious layers.

Can I make tiramisu with tea?

Yes you absolutely can. In fact I think if you are a tea fan you will absolutely love it. Using a tea like Earl Grey adds a beautiful delicate orange flavour which works so well with the creamy goodness of this dessert.

What tea works best for tiramisu?

I have found through trying a range of tea that Earl grey is definitely the best. English Breakfast tea is great if you want a stronger taste. PG Tips and normal every day teas I found far too strong but if you work with the taste you could work out a winning combo if you have the time. For me Earl Grey all the way.

What flavour does Early grey have?

Earl Grey tea has a lovely fruity orange flavour from the bergamot oil. It can also have hint of lemon an bitter orange depending on the blend. Earl Grey is made with black tea and is one of the best tea’s around. It is my favourite.

Tasty Tiramisu

This is such a tasty tiramisu. It’s easy to make, quick to set and is calling to be made. Some people put chocolate shavings on the top, others put cocoa powder on the top. I vote for chocolate shavings. It’s easy to make the shavings by carefully grating the chocolate. Be careful the chocolate can be tricky to shave. If you want to make it even chunkier use a knife and chop up into shards and decorate.
