Top Tips for making an Earl Grey Rum cocktail

Please drink responsibly and check out Drink Aware for more information.

The top tip I have for making cocktails is to make sure you have ice! A cold cocktail is the best and especially with shaken cocktails the ice is so important for cooling the drink down.

Use cocktail glasses and add garnish. Presenting a cocktail is a huge part of the drinking experience. You definitely drink with your eyes as well as your taste buds.

Use fresh ingredients where you can. For example, fresh lemon or lime juice will always taste better than bottled.

How do flavoured rums impact the balance of a cocktail?

Flavoured rums can significantly impact the balance of a cocktail by introducing distinct, concentrated flavours that might not require additional ingredients. For instance, using a spiced rum might eliminate the need for extra spices, while a fruit-flavoured rum like pineapple or orange can reduce or replace the need for fresh fruit or juices.

What types of cocktails work best with flavoured rums?

Flavoured rums are particularly versatile and work well in a variety of cocktails. Fruity flavours like pineapple or cherry are perfect for tropical or tiki-style drinks, such as Piña Coladas or Mai Tais.

Spiced or tea-infused rums, like Earl Grey, can add depth to more complex cocktails, such as an Old Fashioned or a rum-based Negroni.

Dessert-inspired rums, such as chocolate or butterscotch, are excellent in creamy or after-dinner cocktails like a Rum Alexander or a dessert martini.

Can flavoured rums be used in place of traditional rum in classic cocktails?

Yes, flavoured rums can be used in place of traditional rum in classic cocktails. It will change the drink’s overall taste but that can be for the better. A wonderful chance to experiment.

For example, a cherry rum in a classic Daiquiri will add a fruity twist, while a spiced rum might add warmth and complexity to a Mojito.
