Sleep truly is a time of mystery for us. We totally switch off and are unaware of what’s happening to our bodies. We only ever hear of snoring complaints or people reciting stories of our conversations during the night. So, we know our bodies need sleep but what actually happens to use when we sleep? And why is it as important as it is? One of the hottest topics of conversation of centuries been and gone, we’ve only truly grasped it quite recently. So, the first question is…
Why do we sleep?
Not only does sleep contribute to a positive state of mind, it also drastically improves your physical health. Our general day to day relies massively on sleep. What happens when we don’t sleep enough?
One of the biggest changes is, naturally, you’ll find yourself becoming incredibly fatigued and confused. One of the most common cases is forgetfulness, you’ll find yourself forgetting what you’ve done and where you’ve been. There are, however, far worse consequences if your sleep deprivation becomes a real issue. This is why we need to look at the importance of sleep.
There can be far more serious issues as a result of sleep deprivation. These include things like Alzheimer’s, diabetes, depression and strokes.
On average an adult requires around 7-8 hours of sleep to ensure our bodies function to their full capacity. Our species neglect sleep more than any in the animal kingdom, some even take a full season out dedicated to sleeping!
What happens to our body when we sleep?
Sleeping benefits everything from muscle recovery. Lack of sleep can cause weight loss and a majority of this comes from your muscles. Your body becomes reluctant to using its remaining energy to build up muscle. You’ll also find yourself burning less calories so not only do you lose muscle mass, you also gain bad weight. Without sleep you also have less stamina to complete the exercises.
During sleep, your brain is busy collecting and storing all those precious memories and moments you’ve made in the previous day. Memories are stored in the hippocampus part of the brain that’s your brain’s equivalent of the camera roll on your phone. As you sleep, your brain uses this time to move your memories from this part of the brain to a more permanent storage location. So, if you don’t want to lose any of those memoires, you know what to do!
How can you prevent this from happening?
I think you already know the answer to this question. It’s simple, sleep more. It’s one of the not so secret secrets to living your best life. All the above reasons should show you why sleep is so important to your life.
