Smarties

The star of the show in this chocolate Smarties cookies recipe. The smarties make for crunchy chocolate chips and serve as colourful decorations for your chocolate cookies.

Unsalted butter

Best for baking, when you’re adding seasoning to your cookies, unsalted butter adds the texture without your chocolate cookies becoming too salty. If you are using salted butter, just leave out the salt.

Light brown sugar and Caster sugar

Using a mix of both brown and caster sugar in your cookies, will sweeten them and give them a wonderfully deep flavour. You can use just one of the sugars (keep the quantity the same) but I really prefer the mix of both.

Eggs

Eggs give structure to your bake, for this chocolate Smarties cookies recipe, you’ll want two large eggs. This will ensure your cookies are delicious, thick and chewy.

Vanilla extract and Salt

Baking seasoning! You always need to add vanilla extract and a pinch of salt to your cookies. It balances the flavour and enhances all the natural flavours of your chocolate cookies.

Plain flour

Using plain flour in your cookie recipe means you can control the amount of rise in your chocolate cookies. You can use self-raising flour but just want to make sure you take out the bicarb and baking powder.

Cocoa powder

The rich and wonderfully flavouring in these chocolate Smarties cookies. Baking with a rich, dark cocoa powder is the best way to create cookies that are full of flavour and mouth-wateringly chocolatey.

Chocolate Smarties cookie dough
Chocolate Smarties cookies before going into the oven on a baking tray

Start by preheating your oven and lining your baking trays (you’ll probably need two) with parchment paper/ greaseproof paper.

Cream together your butter and sugar until light and fluffy and mix in your eggs one at a time. Once these are fully combined add your vanilla extract.

Sieve in the flour, cocoa, bicarb of soda, baking powder and salt into the bowl. Mix all the ingredients together until your cookie dough forms a thick ball in your mixing bowl.

Ball up your dough into a heaped tablespoon size pieces and lay your cookies on your baking trays.

bake for about 15 minutes until the edges are golden but the centre is still soft, your cookies will continue to cook as they cool.

Once fully cooled on the cooling rack, store in an airtight container (if you have any left!).

Top Tips

Don’t forget to season your bakes. Vanilla extra and a pinch of salt are to your baking what salt and pepper are to your dinner. They are vital to well-flavoured cookies.

Leave your Smarties whole in the cookie dough, this way, when your cookies bake they won’t melt too much and you’ll still get to enjoy the crispy shell.

Chocolate Smarties Cookies Serving Suggestions

Smarties cookies are best when served warmly from the oven. I love warm chewy cookies, especially with a big dollop of vanilla ice cream or fresh cream.

Chocolate Smarties Cookies Substitutions and Variations

Dried fruits

Not a fan of Smarties? Try mixing in some chopped dried fruits, like cranberries, orange peel or candied apple. It gives these chocolate cookies a wonderfully autumnal feel.

Nuts

Crunchy and delicious, I love adding nuts to chocolate cookies, it’s like having a mouthful of Nutella.

Even more chocolate

Always the best option in my book, add even more chocolate to your cookies. You could add a chopped-up chocolate bar, your favourite chocolate buttons or a mix or milk and white chocolate chips.

Sprinkles

Instead of Smarties, why not try adding sprinkles to the cookie batter? You still get the effect of the bright colours but the chunks are smaller and usually, you can find sprinkles in your baking cupboard when you’re in a pinch.

Storing / Making Chocolate Smarties Cookies ahead of time options

I think cookies are best when they’re warm from the oven. But if you do want to make the cookie dough ahead of time, you can make it the night before, portion it into cookie-sized balls and pop the mix in the fridge overnight.

Cooling down your mix before you bake your cookies is a great way to stop them from spreading out too much in the oven.

If you want to make your cookies REALLY ahead of time, you can make your dough & ball it up and then instead of popping it in the fridge, you can freeze your cookie dough. Freezing the dough means you can always have chocolate cookies on demand and they’ll be okay in the freezer for about 1 month.

When I first saw this I was a little confused because in the US, smarties aren’t chocolate. However, I made it with M&Ms and it was great!
