PT Pilates at Battersea Power Station

Fitness writer Jenny Conlon enjoys Pilates on the Thames as with PT Pilates as part of the many Battersea Power Station events worth checking out.

Battersea Power Station is the hottest new destination in West London. The iconic building and surrounding area is being brought to life in a thriving neighbourhood that is fast becoming one of the capital’s leading food and drink destinations. It includes an eclectic mix of bars, restaurants and shops.

PT Pilates – More than just a Pilates class

I attempted my first ever PT Pilates class this weekend which happened to be in the great outdoors of London. This was not your average outdoor class as it took place under a huge white canape on The Coaling Jetty at Battersea Power Station. To say the whole experience blew me away would be a massive understatement. I arrived 30 minutes early for my class, so I had a little time to wander around in the 23 degree Saturday morning sunshine and take in all of the development going on, on the site.

The Coaling Jetty is a historic Grade II* listed jetty and only opened to the public for the first time in history this August so to be able to partake in a PT Pilates class there was not only a joy but also a privilege. To the front of my mat, I had the view of the River Thames and behind me was the momentous Battersea Power Station.

I have an almost 10-month-old baby girl, so getting back into the swing of exercise, especially Pilates, is quite often daunting. Especially if you’re a first time Mum. You can feel quite rusty and also intimidated. Our teacher Kiri was truly amazing and made me feel so relaxed and therefore confident throughout. She educated the class and talked us through each technique, word by word. She made us visualise as we moved which made it a lot easier when trying to get into each position.

This class was not about pushing yourself to the max or being competitive, it was about learning to listen to your body and going as far as felt comfortable for you, which made it such an enjoyable experience. I left the class feeling revitalised, uplifted and a lot more educated.
