APPLE JUICE

This mulled apple juice cocktail wouldn’t be a hot apple rum punch without apple juice! You can use any apple juice but I love using cloudy apple juice as it looks so attractive but I think it tastes better when warmed through.

MULLED SPICES

You can pick up a bag of mulled spices at any supermarket or you can mix your own! If you want to make your own mulled spices you’ll need some cinnamon, cloves star anise and I love adding some fresh ginger too!

SPICED RUM

The perfect addition to this mulled apple juice cocktail, I love using a warm spiced rum in this cocktail, the rum blends really well with the apple juice and mulled spices. You can use any spiced rum, for this cocktail I used Tesco’s Golden and Spiced.

How to make hot apple rum punch – step by step

Start by warming your apple juice on the stove on medium heat. Be sure to stir it gently too.

Slice your orange in half and juice one half. Pour that into the apple juice and slice the other half into thin slices.

Add your spices to the warmed apple juice and let them soak.

Pour your spiced rum into the apple juice and let it simmer for a few minutes unitl warmed through

Pour and serve, don’t forget to scoop out the spices!

Top Tips

You can easily make this apple rum punch cocktail for a big group by scaling up the ingredients and leaving the mulled apple juice cocktail on to the hob. The spices will continue to soak too.

Serve your warm apple juice cocktail with dried orange slices. They look lovely and smell even better!

Substitutions and variations

ALCOHOL-FREE MULLED APPLE JUICE

Omit the spiced rum and follow the recipe as normal. The warm apple juice with the mulled wine spices is wonderful and perfect for kids and big kids alike.

If you can find non-alcoholic rum then you can use that in place of the rum.

Making hot apple rum punch/ahead of time options

This Hot Apple punch cocktail can easily be made ahead of time and reheated when you’re ready to serve. You can mix the rum, apple juice and spices together and then let them sit in the pan until you’re ready to start warming them through.

Equipment

Ingredients
 

  • 1 litre (1 litre) cloudy apple juice
  • ½ juice (1) orange
  • 200 ml spiced rum
  • 2 (2) cinnamon sticks
  • 4 (4) star anise
  • 1 cm fresh ginger (optional thinkly sliced)

Instructions
 

  • Add the apple juice to a saucepan on a medium/low heat.
  • Slice the orange in half. Squeeze the juice from one-half of the orange into the apple juice. Slice the remaining half into slices and keep to the side to decorate the glasses.
  • Add the star anise and cinnamon sticks.
  • Allow the apple juice to simmer gently for 5 minutes until warm.
  • Pour the apple juice into the glasses. Decorate with orange slices, the spices from the apple juice and a few redcurrants for colour.

Notes

It’s a great sharing drink perfect for decorating the tree with family or bringing out for a Christmas party.
