Top Tips for making a plum galette

First and foremost, make sure you’re using ripe, juicy plums for the simple plum tart recipe filling. If your plums aren’t quite ripe, let them sit at room temperature for a day or two until they are nice and soft.

Make sure your shortcrust pastry ingredients are at room temperature before starting. This will ensure that the dough comes together smoothly and doesn’t become too tough.

Be sure to roll out your dough evenly so that it bakes evenly in the oven. If you’re having trouble rolling it out, try refrigerating the dough for 10-15 minutes before rolling.

When it comes to assembling your plum galette, start by arranging the plum slices in a circular pattern, leaving about an inch of dough around the edges. Then, gently fold the edges of the dough over the fruit, pleating it as you go. This creates a rustic, free-form look that’s perfect for a fall tablescape.

When rolling out the dough, use a lightly floured surface and roll in one direction, rotating the dough as you go to get an even thickness. Don’t worry if the edges of your plum galette aren’t perfectly uniform – the rustic look is part of the charm!

Serving Suggestions

If you’re planning on serving up a simple plum galette this fall, there are plenty of delicious ways to present it to your guests.

For a simple yet elegant option, try pairing individual slices of French plum galette with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Not only does this add a creamy complement to the sweet and tart plum flavours, but it also makes for a beautiful presentation.

If you’re looking to add a bit of texture to your dessert table, consider serving your galette alongside a crunchy topping or crumble. Crushed nuts or granola make excellent choices here, as they add some crunch without overpowering the delicate flavours of the galette.

Alternatively, you could top your simple plum tart recipe with a drizzle of honey or caramel for an extra touch of sweetness.

For a truly unique presentation, try serving your Plum Galette in individual ramekins or mini pie dishes. This not only makes for a fun and unexpected dining experience, but it also allows your guests to customise their galette with their toppings and add-ins.

Plum Galette Substitutions and variations

Add a mix of fruit

For a twist on the classic Plum Galette, try experimenting with different types of fruit. Apples, pears, and peaches all work well in this recipe, any fruit that softens when it’s cooked is perfect with a light and buttery puff pastry.

Sprinkle over a crumble oat topping

Another way to expand on this recipe is to make a crumble topping and bake it on top of the fruit. It’s a lovely extra texture and flavour. You can either add the crumble topping to the galette before baking or bake the crumble topping separately and sprinkle it on when serving.

Add nuts for extra flavour

The crunch and flavour of some chopped nuts take this simple plum galette recipe to the next level. Sweet almonds layer nicely on the top or some chopped walnuts tossed into the mix are truly wonderful.

Fresh herbs

Rosemary or thyme would be a delicious twist in this autumnal galette, its light and floral flavour compliments the sweetness of this dessert. I prefer a sprig or two of fresh rosemary but you can mix it up.

Spices

You can also add in different spices depending on the fruit you choose – try cinnamon and nutmeg for apples and ginger for pears. Try experimenting with different spices with your different fruits to find a flavour profile you love.

plum galette with puff pastry

If you have puff pastry you can definitely make this plum galette with puff pastry. It’s fantastic. You can make it and cook it in the same way as this recipe. However when you roll the puff pastry out use a fork to prick the pastry. This will stop the pastry from rising too high where the fruit is.

Storing plum galette / Making ahead of time options

To keep your simple Plum Galette fresh and tasty for as long as possible, proper storing techniques are key. Once your galette has cooled completely, wrap it in plastic wrap or aluminium foil and store it in the refrigerator. It should last for up to three days.

This is best cooked and enjoyed fresh though. But if you want to make this simple plum galette ahead of time you can make the pastry and roll it out ready for the topping to be added and it be put straight into the oven.

Adding the fruit too far in advance can cause the pastry to become soggy when cooked so make sure you only do it just before you’re ready to bake.
