Baking Potato
Of course for a baked potato recipe, you will need a baking potato! These are readily available in supermarkets and are usually very affordable too. You can normally buy 4 for about £1.
Sunflower Oil
We use sunflower oil for our baked potatoes. It’s a lot more affordable than olive oil at the moment. Sunflower oil doesn’t have a strong taste so it doesn’t affect the potato once cooked.
Salt and Pepper
Salt and pepper are a lovely way to season the potato skins before baking. The crispy skin is delicious and it really benefits from the salt and pepper.

Wash and scrub the baking potatoes. Dry them and then rub them with oil. Add the salt and pepper. Score the potatoes and add them to the air fryer.
Bake the potatoes in the air fryer for 40 minutes, flipping them halfway through. It is really that easy! Then they are ready to serve.
Top Tips
Make sure you pierce the skin of the potato before cooking. This helps the steam to escape and cook evenly. Plus it reduces the risk of the potatoes exploding from the pressure under the skin.
As soon as the potatoes are cooked, give them a squish to reveal the inside and help them cool a little before eating. Then add a good blob of butter to allow it to melt and sink into the potatoes.
Best served hot from the air fryer.
Serving Suggestions
Beans
Baked beans are a classic topping for baked potatoes. Juicy and full of flavour, a perfect addition. Plus perfect for vegetarians too.
Cheese
There are so many cheeses you can add to an air fryer baked potato. A classic choice is Cheddar cheese but why not spice it up with a red Leicester or even a garlic and herb cheese?
Tuna
Another classic topping for baked potatoes is tuna normally as a tuna mayonnaise. Creamy and cooling on top of a hot potato is a great choice for a serving suggestion.
Salads
I love adding a crisp cold salad to serve along aside my baked potatoes. The cold and crisp salad compliments the hot fluffy potato.
Single Baked Potato in Air Fryer
Cooking a single baked potato in the air fryer is easy and quick. Simple scrub and dry the potato, add the oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Cook as normal by following the recipe at the bottom of the page for full details.

Substitutions and variations
Baked potatoes are baked potatoes. They are simple and there aren’t really a lot of ways to have variety on this classic. The best way to add variation is with your toppings.
Storing Air Fryer Baked Potato / Making ahead of time options
Baked potatoes are best served fresh and hot.
You can always prepare them by washing, oiling and adding salt and pepper and cook them when ready. I’ve done this and added them to the air fryer earlier in the day and then just press go on the air fryer when ready.

- Is it faster to bake a potato in the oven or air fryer?
- Should I microwave my potatoes before air frying?

How long to cook baked potatoes in air fryer?
For the best results cook your baked potatoes in the air fryer for approximately 45 minutes for medium sized potatoes. Larger potatoes will need longer.
Is it faster to bake a potato in the oven or air fryer?
It is a lot faster to bake a potato in the air fryer than oven. It’s approximately 45 minutes in the air fryer and 2 hours 30 minutes in the oven.
It is best to make baked potatoes in the oven when you are making a lot of them or making something else in the oven for the same amount of time.
Should I microwave my potatoes before air frying?
For the best results you don’t need to microwave potatoes before air frying. Microwaving baked potatoes does speed up the cooking but I believe they taste better when cooked in the air fryer.
Is it cheaper to cook a jacket potato in an air fryer or oven?
It is a lot cheaper to cook a jacket potato in the air fryer than in the oven.
To run an air fryer costs approximately 5p for every 10 minutes (30p an hour), with ovens costing about 60p an hour. Air fryers are much more energy-efficient than most convection ovens because they cook food much faster.
Do I need to poke holes in baked potatoes?
Yes you always need to poke holes in baked potatoes. Potatoes can explode under pressure from the heat and being cooked. The skin on a potato traps moisture so poking holes allows the steam to be released as the potato cooks.

Air Fryer Baked Potato
Equipment
Ingredients
- 4 Baking Potatoes
- sunflower oil
- salt and pepper
Instructions
- Wash and scrub the potatoes and dry them.
- Rub the oil into the potatoes and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Pierce all over with a fork or cut a line with a knife. This is to help steam escape and cook evenly.
- Place the potatoes into the air fryer. Make sure they have space around them for the air to circulate and to give even cooking. For the best results place directly on the grill plate. (If you add aluminium foil around the potatoes they might need a little extra cooking time.)
- Turn the air fryer to 200ºC / 400°F. Air fry the potatoes for 20 minutes then flip them over and cook for another 20 minutes. Larger potatoes will need a little longer. they should be easy to cut into.
- Cut a cross into the top of the potatoes. Return them to the air fryer to crisp the skin. Continue air frying for 5 minutes.
- Serve the potatoes and give them a little squeeze (be careful it will be hot) to open up the cut in the top. Add your favourite toppings and enjoy!
