As the title suggests, this recipe requires mincemeat. You can either make your own or get shop bought for ease. If you do fancy making your own then check out my slow cooker vegan mincemeat recipe.

  • Puff Pastry  – You can make your own as well but that is a lot of extra steps, ready rolled puff pastry is affordable and perfect every time.
  • Mincemeat – you can use ready bought or try making your own. There is something so wonderful about making your own mincemeat. The smell and flavours are can’t be beaten.
  • Egg ( this is just for browning, you can use milk or a vegan alternative, like coconut oil)
  • Icing Sugar (optional for a beautiful Christmas dusting – but super tasty addition!)

How to make Puff Pastry Mincemeat Pinwheels – step by step

  • Remove the puff pastry from the fridge about 20 minutes before you want to start. This will help it be soft enough to unroll without breaking.
  • Preheat your oven to 200° / 180ºC fan/ Gas 6. Line the baking sheets with baking paper/ parchment. This helps your mince pie pinwheels to not stick to your tray, it also makes for easier clean up.
  • Unroll the puff pastry sheet onto a lightly floured surface.
  • Spoon out the mincemeat onto the puff pastry and spread evenly over the top, using the back of a wet spoon helps to create an even layer and the mincemeat won’t stick to your spoon. Be sure to leave a small border along the top and the bottom as this will create our seal.

Rolling up the Puff Pastry Mincemeat Pinwheels along the long side of pastry
  • Roll up the puff pastry along the longest side. Place it seam side down. You should see a little mincemeat spiral on the ends.
  • Using a sharp knife, carefully cut 1inch slices and place them on the prepared baking trays. Give them a little distance between them as they will spread when baking.
  • In the small bowl beat the egg . Use a pastry to brush the egg over the slices of mincemeat pinwheels. This is called an egg wash and helps to brown the pastry for that generous golden colour.
  • Place the mince pie pinwheels the oven and bake for 15-18 minutes, until golden.
  • Enjoy when still warm with a dusting of icing sugar, cinnamon or just straight off the cooling rack. ( please mind your fingers they will be very hot when they first come out the oven!)

Substitutions and variations for Puff Pastry Mincemeat Pinwheels

DRIED CRANBERRIES

A great addition to these mincemeat pinwheels is dried cranberries. They add an extra sweetness to the finished puff pastry pinwheels which are just so delicious. It gives it even more of a Christmas flavour and the specks of red dried cranberries looks beautiful too.

When you spoon out the mincemeat on to the puff pastry sprinkle the dried cranberries on top before rolling the pastry up. I tend to cut up my cranberries as they can be pretty large. This way it helps gives you more delcious cranberry coverage in the pinwheels, without having to use up a lot of cranberries.

CINNAMON

A great addition to these mincemeat pinwheels is cinnamon. One of the best Christmas flavours, in my opinion, cinnamon really acts as flavour booster for this recipe. I think the best way is to add a sprinkle when they are fresh from the oven.

NUTELLA

If you don’t like mincemeat or you want to make something for children too then swap out the mincemeat for a chocolate spread. The best spreads to use in pinwheels have to include nutella, JimJams chocolate spread, jam or other spread that you love.
