The key ingredient of this delicious cocktail is none other than the sweet and juicy strawberry. These beautiful berries not only add a burst of flavour to the strawberry rum punch but also bring a beautiful red colour to the cocktail.
White rum is typically clear in colour and has a lighter taste profile compared to other types of rum.White rum cocktails are so varied because it’s such a versatile ingredient. It’s the perfect base for this cocktail, as it allows the sweetness of the strawberries to shine through without overpowering the drink.
When it comes to selecting a white rum for this cocktail, I recommend using a high-quality brand that has a smooth finish. This will ensure that your cocktail is not only delicious but also has a sophisticated taste. Some popular white rum brands include Bacardi, Captain Morgan, and Mount Gay.
To balance out the tartness of the strawberries and the sharpness of the white rum, sugar syrup is a must-have in this cocktail.
While some may opt for regular granulated sugar, simple syrup yields a smoother and more uniform texture. Plus, it dissolves easily, which means you won’t end up with gritty bits of sugar in your drink.
Where can you buy sugar syrup?
Sugar syrup is widely available but I get mine from either the supermarket or I buy this small bottle of sugar syrup from Amazon (affiliate link). I don’t use it a lot so I find a small bottle is more affordable and more likely to be used. However, sugar syrup lasts a long time if you can only get a large bottle.
How to make Strawberry white rum cocktail – step by step
Start by popping a sprig of mint and a slice of lime into your glass. Add some ice to your glass to chill it too.
Chop your strawberries into small chunks and place them at the bottom of your glass also.
Crush your strawberries slightly to release the flavour.
Measure out and pour your white rum over the strawberries.
Top with lemonade and enjoy! I served mine in gorgeous glasses without a straw but you could add a straw to your glass or serve them in mason jars for a vintage look.
A key piece of equipment for this recipe is a cocktail muddler. However, if you don’t have one you can still make this recipe. Instead of adding the strawberries, mint and sugar syrup to the glass add it to a bowl and use a fork or the back of a spoon to mash the ingredients together. Then pour it into the glass and carry on.

Consider swapping out the white rum for a flavoured rum, such as coconut or pineapple, to add an extra layer of tropical flavour.
You could try using frozen and then defrosted strawberries. They will already be mushy so will work really well.
For a non-alcoholic version of this strawberry rum punch, simply replace the rum with a non-alcoholic rum. There are a few versions available to order online.
If you’re feeling adventurous, try infusing your own simple syrup with herbs like basil or mint. This will add a refreshing twist to the drink and make it perfect for sipping on a hot summer day.
You could try swapping out the white rum for another spirit. For example, you could use raspberries instead of strawberries or swap the white rum for vodka or gin. With these substitutions and make-ahead options, you can easily create a customised cocktail that suits your tastes and occasion.
