VEGAN CRUMBLE TOPPED MINCE PIES
In the UK Jus-Rol Shortcrust pastry available in supermarkets is naturally vegan. So if you mix that with a vegan mincemeat (like my slow cooker vegan mincemeat) it is easy to make these mince pies vegan.
For the oat crumble topping you can make it vegan by using vegan butter. The Flora plant butter in unsalted works really well and is available in most supermarkets.
CRANBERRY MINCEMEAT MINCE PIES
You can follow the recipe below by swapping out the mincemeat for your own homemade luxury Cranberry mincemeat. It’s delicious and an excellent addition to the traditional mince pie.
Alternative toppings for Mince Pies
While pastry-topped mince pies are traditional there are so many other toppings you can try. The best of course is crumble topped, in my opinion, but you could also try these.
Grated chocolate
This might sound unusual but grated or finely chopped chocolate can have a rich flavour and taste that works so well with the fruitiness.
Puff Pastry instead of shortcrust pastry
Normally mince pies are made with shortcrust pastry so you can mix it up by using puff pastry on top. This adds extra height and of course, more pastry and that is only ever a good thing.
Flaked almonds
A quick and easy topping for mince pies is to add flaked almonds. They make a little topping that holds the mincemeat in and also adds a little extra crunch.

FREEZER MINCE PIES
Freeze your individual mince pies before baking, then cook from frozen and add a few minutes to the cooking time. I recommend freezing the mince pies in the cupcake/fairy cake tray to freeze them in the right shape.
Once the mince pies with crumble topping have been in the freezer for an hour, remove them from the tray and put them back in the freezer. This way they will have started freezing and will hold their shape and take up less space.

Recipe
Crumble Topped Mince Pies
Equipment
- Pastry cutters
Ingredients
Mince Pie Ingredients
- 1 sheet shortcrust pastry (approximately 350g)
- flour for dusting
- 300 g (1.5 cups) mincemeat
- 1 egg
Crumble Topping
- 150 g (1 ¼ cups) plain flour / all purpose flour
- 150 g (5 ¼ oz) unsalted butter
- 75 g (2 ⅔ oz) golden caster sugar
- 100 g (1 ¼ cups) rolled oats
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 180ºC / 360ºF.
Making the Mince Pies
- Unroll your shop bought shortcrust pastry or make your own shortcrust pastry with my recipe.
- Lightly dust a 12-hole fairy cake tin tray with plain flour.
- Using pastry cutters, cut a base circle which is a little larger than the fairy cake hole on the tray so when you push it in it fills the hole.
- Add mincemeat to the pastry, filling it up to almost full. You want to leave some space to allow the pastry to expand without the filling falling out.
- Gently whisk an egg with a fork and brush the egg glaze over the mince pies edges
Crumble Topping
- Put the 150g flour, 75g caster sugar and 100g rolled oats and mix together along with any spices. I would recommend a sprinkle of cinnamon. Add 150g of unsalted butter to the mixing bowl.
- Rub the ingredients together with your fingers and thumbs to create a crumble texture.
Assembling the Crumble Mince Pies
- Sprinkle the crumble over the mince pie tarts to lightly cover the mincemeat.
- Place in the oven for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
Cook in the Air Fryer
- Air fry for 15 minutes at 180ºC / 360ºF in your air fryer oven. Check after 10 minutes.
- Allow the mince pies to cool slightly before removing them from the tin and enjoy. Best served with ice cream or cream.
- If you want to reheat them pop them in the microwave for 20-second bursts until piping hot.
