Pears on toast with blue cheese and figs is a classic collection of flavours and it’s the perfect time of year to make it with in the season fruit.

Pears on Toast – Bacon and Balsamic Vinegar. A lovely way of adding pear to create a beautiful breakfast. The balsamic vinegar adds a tartness to the sweet.

Pears on Toast – Cream Cheese and Blackberries. This is a pearing – pardon the pun made in heaven. It’s a simple one to make but pacts a flavour punch.

What to bake with fresh pears?
There are so many things to make with fresh pears and my favourite is this cake. The recipe for pear crumble cake is easy and will be a favourite for your friends and family straight away. The fresh pears are juicy and add a lovely sweetness to the finished cake. The crumble on the top is even nicer and makes it feel like the best combo of cake and classic crumble.
How do I make a crumble cake?
Making crumble cake is really easy. There is a softer sponge cake and it is topped with a soft crumble topping. The crumble topping adds the beautiful texture. As it’s cooking, the crumble with cook slightly and go golden brown. I love how the cake and crumble go so well together. A winning combination for sure!
To make the pear crumble cake…
Making the crumble
- Grease and line an 8 inch square cake tin (round works too).
- Make the crumble topping first.
- Put the flour, butter and sugar in a bowl and rub together to form crumbs.
- When the crumbs are made, stir in the cinnamon and put the bowl to one side.
Making the cake
- Preheat the oven to 180º/160ºfan.
- In a bowl cream together the sugar and the butter.
- Add the eggs and mix in well.
- Sieve in the flour, baking powder, cinnamon and ginger in the bowl and mix.
- Peel and chop the pear into 1cm cubes and mix in well. Add a little extra flour if the mixture turns too wet from the pear.
- Add the chocolate chips.
- Spoon the mix into the tin and bake for 25-35 minutes until the crumble is starts going golden brown and when there is no mixture on a cake tester.
- Allow to cool in the tin for about 10 minutes then take out of the tin and transfer to a cooling wrack or plate. I love this cake when it’s still warm. It is nice with a little custard or cream.

What do I need for a Pear Crumble Cake?
For this delicious pear and chocolate cake you will only need eight ingredients and most of them are good store cupboard ingredients.
- 150 g caster sugar
- 150 g unsalted butter
- 2 large eggs
- 150 g self raising flour
- quarter of a teaspoon baking powder
- quarter of a teaspoon of cinnamon and ground ginger
- 2 pears
- 100 g chocolate chips
If you want to make this an easy pear cake you can make it without the chocolate chips.
Apple pear crumble cake
If you prefer apples over pears then you can turn this recipe into a tasty apple crumble cake instead. Follow the recipe in the same way but instead of adding the pears, add apples instead. I would recommend adding eating apples rather than cooking apples. They won’t be as a bitter or strong and will cook really well and taste lovely with the chocolates. Chocolate chip crumble is also one to try if you are in the crumble mood.
Easy pear cake
If you want to make this easy pear cake without chocolate you can. It’s a weird cake to most people but pear cake is wonderful to me. It’s lovely and juicy and the combo helps the finished cake stay moist for longer.

Equipment
- 8inch cake tin
