I am a bit obsessed with pancakes I’m not going to lie. I love them. They are so easy to adapt and change with each making session. At the moment I am loving a stack of American style pancakes for a special brunch or breakfast. In my latest batch I raided the pantry for something to add to them. I found some glacé cherries and a bag of dark chocolate chips. I knew that together they would make an incredible breakfast. Black forest pancakes!

The finished stack of chocolate cherry pancakes ready to be served for brunch.

How gorgeous doe these glacé cherries look ready to be used!
What cherries can I add to pancakes?
Adding cherries to pancakes is really easy but there are some which I have found work better than others. They all mix in well but some distribute better and some cook better. You don’t want them sticking to the pan!
Glacé cherries – adding glacé cherries to pancakes is my most favourite type of cherries to do. They are sweet are sticky but not too juicy so they don’t upset the consistency of the mix too much.
Dried cherries – Dried cherries are cherries which have been dried with heat normally over a few hours. These cherries are great to use but can often be more expensive than glacé cherries.
Fresh cherries – fresh cherries in pancakes are a lovely addition to top the pancakes. However because they are so juicy they can make the mixture too runny. If you do want to use fresh cherries remove the stones and chop them up in to small pieces. Use a piece of kitchen paper to absorb as much liquid as you can before adding them to the mix.
How how to cook chocolate cherry pancakes
Cooking these pancakes is easy. The chocolate chips and cherry will stick to the pan a little but don’t be worried it’s not a problem. When you make these pancakes make sure the pan is non stick and at a good medium to hot heat with a little butter.
As you pour the mix in to the pan leave the pancakes for a few minutes until the air bubbles are visible on the top. When the bubbles are there then it’s time to flip. This is the best way to know when they need to be flipped.

At first I had thought I had burned them when I flipped them but it was the dark chocolate chips which had melted while cooking. The cherries added a fruitiness to the finished pancakes and the chocolate a tasty rich bit which was delicious together.

I would say chocolate and cherry pancakes are just for special occasions but sometimes a midweek brunch at home is occasion enough.
Pancake recipe for children
The pancakes are super easy to make and great to make with children too. It’s a good whisking up exercise. When the results are pancakes there will be a lot more dedication to getting them made. I know it works on me. I’m driven to do the hand mixing, by the promise of eating the delicious food when it’s done.

Black forest pancakes
Black forest is a truly wonderful set of flavours and you can see why are so iconic now. Chocolate and cherry are a flavour partnership which just keep on giving us wonderful results.
Making black forest pancakes is really easy I promise. You take a beautiful simple pancake recipe and mix in chopped cherries. Fresh or preserved cherries both work, but you will need to take the pips out of the fresh if you have them.
Once the cherries are we add a few chocolate chips and hey presto we are ready to cook.
If you want to take it to the next level drizzle molten chocolate sauce over them when you are serving. You definitely can’t go wrong with more chocolate.

Chocolate pancakes
Chocolate pancakes are delicious so easy. If you want to make these extra chocolatey you can replace 1 tablespoon of flour with 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder. Resulting in pancakes which are chocolatey with chocolate chips in!

Maraschino cherry pancakes
For this recipe I used glacé cherries but Maraschino cherries would work so well too! They are two versions of the same fruit, the glacé which has been more processed in the thick syrup. The maraschino I find to be a bit juicier. Both will work and both will taste rather delicious.
Sour cherry pancakes
Sour cherries in pancakes are really great. It give that adjustment from the more sweet version of pancakes. They sweet and sour are a great match for pancakes and in general!
I love this recipe for pancakes. It never fails me and it’s one I give to everyone who wants a really simple recipe to use. If you don’t like cherries leave them out. Not a fan of dark chocolate then make it milk chocolate. It’s easy to adapt to your favourite flavours.

What can I serve with chocolate cherry pancakes?
These pancakes are great ready to eat as they are. I’ve also served them with maple syrup on top (Definitely one for the sweet tooth fans). Ice cream also worked really well or even a drizzle of single cream works. If you make a few extra they taste really good cold as a snack later with a cup of tea!
The top things to serve with chocolate cherry pancakes would have to be;
- maple syrup
- ice cream
- single cream
- fresh cherries
- blackberries
- strawberries
- honey
- lemon juice
What do I need for Black Forest Pancakes?
You only need a few ingrients to make these delicious black forest pancakes. Most of which you will have at home.
All the dry ingredients are always found in my pantry. Eggs and milk I always make sure we have in the fridge too. Chocolate chips and cherries are not always in the cupboard. However after making a few Christmas goodies with cherries in, I had some left over and they seem to last for ever!
